NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has named Dr. Jack Sun as Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute. With his appointment, the hospital aims to strengthen its position as a leading center for advanced heart failure care in Southern California.
Dr. Sun brings extensive experience in treating complex cardiac conditions. He will spearhead the development of a specialized program for patients with severe heart failure, including those recovering from major heart attacks or cardiac arrest. The new program will offer innovative therapies and advanced mechanical support technologies to restore heart function.
“Dr. Sun’s arrival marks a new chapter for cardiac care at Hoag,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, Hoag President and CEO. “His clinical excellence and forward-thinking approach reflect our mission to offer top-tier cardiac treatment right here in Orange County.”
A pioneer in minimally invasive heart surgery, Dr. Sun specializes in procedures such as mitral valve repair, aortic surgery, and surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. He is also recognized for his work in mechanical circulatory support, which helps patients with failing hearts regain stability.
Dr. Sun is committed to advancing surgical techniques that lead to smaller incisions, faster recovery, and less pain. His vision aligns with Hoag’s patient-centered approach and goal of delivering exceptional outcomes through innovation and compassionate care.
Before joining Hoag, Dr. Sun served as Chief of Cardiac Surgery and Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine. He has authored more than 60 publications and presentations, and his research has received over $1 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health and other organizations.
Educated in Canada, Dr. Sun earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed his residency in cardiac surgery at McMaster University. He later completed a fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard University.
“I have always been driven to care for patients with the most challenging cardiac conditions,” said Dr. Sun. “Hoag’s commitment to clinical excellence and innovation makes it the ideal place to lead the next phase in heart failure care.”
Dr. Sun’s appointment comes as Hoag continues to earn national recognition. In the 2024–2025 rankings by U.S. News & World Report, Hoag was rated high performing in five cardiac specialties, including heart attack care, bypass surgery, and heart failure. The Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute also led Orange County in cardiothoracic surgery, with over 440 procedures performed last year.
