UVA Health Partners to Launch App for Early Detection of Heart Attacks and Strokes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — UVA Health is collaborating with top research institutions to develop a new app designed to help users quickly identify signs of heart attacks and strokes. The app aims to guide users in seeking timely medical care, a crucial step in improving survival and recovery rates.

Heart attacks and strokes are among the leading causes of death in Virginia. Experts emphasize that early recognition and intervention can save lives.

“Patients use their smartphone or tablet to answer questions about symptoms they are experiencing,” said UVA Health neurologist Dr. Jonathan Crowe. “The app helps users determine if these symptoms could be related to a heart attack or stroke. It also guides them through a basic physical exam and then offers one of three recommendations: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room, contact a medical hotline for specialized advice, or call their primary care doctor.”

The app is being developed through a partnership between UVA Health, Harvard University, Northeastern University, and other leading health institutions. This collaboration aims to harness wearable technology and smart devices to improve emergency response and patient outcomes.
