A cardiac arrhythmia, likely caused by a genetic defect, has been identified as the cause of death for 21-year-old Italian cyclist Simone Roganti, according to a report from the Italian news agency ANSA.
On the same day, Roganti’s team, TDT-Unibet, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, reminiscing about signing him to his first professional contract.
Pescara prosecutor Luca Sciarretta has ordered an autopsy to confirm the cause of Roganti’s death. Pathologist Cristian D’Ovidio from the University of Chieti determined that ventricular fibrillation, likely linked to a genetic factor, was responsible for the fatal arrhythmia. Reports indicate that Roganti experienced chest pains and vomiting late on the evening of August 30, and paramedics were unable to revive him.
Roganti’s funeral took place in Piazza Di Marzio in Spoltore on Wednesday. Members of his current team and his previous team, MG K Vis Colors for Peace, were in attendance.
In their tribute, Unibet-TDT recalled the moment they welcomed Roganti at Schiphol Airport just a week prior. “You had a smile on your face, from ear to ear. It was a special moment, not only for you but also for us. You were about to make your dream come true,” the team wrote.
They described how Roganti enjoyed his first ‘tosti’ with them, which became a symbol of their warm welcome.
The team went on to reflect on the joy of watching Roganti sign his first professional cycling contract, expressing how proud he was to have his family by his side during that milestone. “When [Bas Tietema], Wim, and [Julia Soek] traveled to Spoltore for your farewell, we felt the warmth of your family and saw the beautiful Italian hills where you trained daily. The impact you left on the community is immense.”
As they gathered at his kitchen table, surrounded by photos and trophies, they acknowledged the significant role cycling played in Roganti’s life. “We are proud that we were able to share the last miles of your race with you and your family,” they concluded.
